Indians at Oscars
Finally, the day has come when India made it presence felt at the Oscars. I am as happy and proud as every other Indian. Though "Slumdog Millionaire" is not an Indian/Hindi film, most part of it definetly has the Indian/hindi cinema kind of narration. It felt like hollywood has taken a leaf from Indian/hindi cinema. I can say "Slumdog Millinaire" is a mature Indian movie made in hollywood (by a British director). Still we can't take any credit for it. But definitely we enjoy its success. It was great to see AR Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty winning oscars. It was even great to see AR Rahman perform in Oscar ceremony.I was reading a lot of news about oscars the next day and found some facts which I didnot even know before. I would like to share some it.
The only category where an Indian has previously (before 2009) won an Oscar is costume design, by Bhanu Athaiiya for Gandhi. (Shekhar Kapoor directed film Elizabeth - The Golden Age won an award for costume design and Alexandra Byrne was the costume designer.)
Satyajit Ray was awarded academy (Oscar) honorary award for his contribution to world cinema in 1992.
Although some movies Like Mother India(1957), Salaam Bombay(1988) and Lagaan(2001) made it to Oscar Nominations in Best Froeign Language Film category, none of them won.
List of Indian submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film
Actually it is not possible for Indian movies to enter Oscars, because Oscars are only for Hollywood movies. Best foreign language film is the only category were an Indian movie can win a oscar. We have great technicians, directors and actors like Mani Ratnam, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shekhar Kapur, P.C. Sreeram, Shyam Benegal, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aamir Khan, Kamal Haasan, AR Rahman and many more (tough to name all of them) who have made there presence felt to the global cinema. They can only make it to Oscars if they work for Hollywood movies (like AR Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty). So Oscar does not define the quality of work they do. I would like to see more technicians and actors like this who will make mature movies and make it a point to the global audience.

DreaMatrix - the dream world
This is a continuation to my earlier article "Living in your dreams" which was incomplete. Say a person average lifetime is 60 years. He does so many things in this span of life. But on an average he will be sleeping for 8hrs/day. It means out of 60 years of life, 20 years he will be just sleeping and doing nothing else. Now how many of you think that this is a waste? In my case, the time I spend for sleeping is not wasted, because sleeping is not just like any other thing that I do in my life. Through sleeping, I get a chance to live in a different world, that is "my world of dreams"(dream-world) or you can also call it "the second world" or "virtual world" and I named it as "DreaMatrix".
DreaMatrix is a virtual world were I have the control on most of the things that have/can/will happen. I get plugged into this world once I go to sleep on my bed. I can be anything and do anything I wish in this world. I can be a super hero, a college going guy, a passoinate lover, a common man or just be myself. In this world I even have the ability to travel in time. I can go back to my childhood, my college days and even in to the future. I can just switch between countries and places in few seconds. Most the people I know in this real world also exist in the virtual one just playing their original characters. I also do see some virtual characters, like a monster when I am a super hero, or a unknown girl with whom I am in love. If I am really missing someone, and they are too far from me in the real world, I can just go and see them in the virtual world. Like I can just go to India and see my parents, I can go back to the past college days, see my college and friends. Nothing can stop. I can even go to the future and see my friends, my sister or sometime even myself getting married. For some reason if I get kicked out of the virtual world in the middle of a situation/scene, like any disturbance, or if I have to wake up (as I have to go to work); there is a possiblitly that the next time I go back to sleep, I enter the virtual world and can continue from where I left. Though I break a lot of rules that we follow in the real world, I do respect some.
Often, it is really easy for me to get into this world, but most of the times it turns out to be tough to get out of it, because I have to wake up and I am very lazy to do so. And most of the times it is tough to figure/find out that I am actually in a dream, then I would be thinking that's the reality and would continue in that mode. It is really strange that sometime, I will know that I am actually in my dream world. That is when I tend to have a control over it. I am a big time movie lover. So most of the things/scenes happening in the virtual world would be filmi/movie style. So every time I enter this world there is a specific story with a theme. The story is then processed and a script is written with interesting scenes. These scenes are directed one at a time with tight screenplay and crisp/sharp editing. And I hold the total control of all these. In some cases I might just leave the control to "fate" as it happens in real world. But all this goes in vain, because the moment I wake up, I hardly remember any of this stuff, my mind will be just left with some traces. I think really hard to trace it back, but doesn't help much. But, I do remember some of them.
------------------
In general, it is not just me, but most us do dream a lot. Many a times when we are surprised by some action/situation we pinch ourselves to feel the difference between dream and reality. It is the nature of most dreams that we take them for reality and while dreaming we are unaware that we are in fact in a dream-world. Even if we know we are in a dream, would we be able to take control of the situation and circumstances and take or change any further actions that take place in the dream? Would we be able to respond the way we want to? Would we be able to do anything in the dream? Does our senses work in a dream? Tough to answer these questions. It is obvious that we eventually wake up, and realize that it is in fact a dream and the most or some part of the experience is stored in the mind. It is really hard for most of us to remember where it started or where it ended and what all happened in a dream.
Most of us, at one time or another, have been struck with the thought that we might mistake a dream for reality, or reality for a dream. When we dream we are often blissfully ignorant that we are dreaming. Given this, and the fact that dreams often seem as vivid and realistic as real life, how can you rule out the possibility that you might be dreaming even now, as you sit at your computer and read this? It seems we have no justification for the belief that we are not dreaming. If so, then it seems we similarly have no justification in thinking that the world we experience is the real world. What if the world round us is not real? Then are we just some fictional characters living in a dream of the Almighty?

I am Happy :)
I am Happy that I cannot see this beautiful world and all great creations by God, because I busy with my laptop.
I am Happy that I cannot sing, I cannot dance, I cannot jump, I cannot shout, because I am in a deep sleep.
I am Happy, because I have a wonderful family- best parents, caring siblings, well wishers.
I am Happy, that I don't have a lot of friends, because I have few good friends.
I am Happy, that I am not eating anything today, because I am on a diet.
I am Happy, that I don't have a dress to wear, because I did not do my laundry.
I am Happy, that I did not have job for one year, because I got one today.
I am Happy, that I don't have money in my pocket, because I use credit cards.
I am Happy, that I am bored, because the movie is not good.
I am Happy, that I was not able to get a doctor appointment, because I don't need one.
I am Happy, Yes I am :)
I am Happy, because I am still existing in this beautiful world.
Are you???

Dasvidaniya - The Best Good Bye Ever
Dasvidaniya is a Hindi Movie, released some time in November,2008. The movie is about a normal person, a middle class bachelor 'Amar Kaul' who goes to work early in the morning, prepares a things to do list for the day and after working for 10+ hours returns home making sure he has got all his listed things done. A routine visit to a doctor reveals that he has stomach cancer and will be "living" only for next 3 months. He realizes that he has been "dead" all these days and decides to "live the life" for this 3 months. Each and everyone of us can connect with Amar's character. We see Amar in our daily life. If you haven't, after you are done reading this, and after you watch the movie go and see yourself in front of a mirror and think for a moment.
"Amar is symbolic of all these people who have always wanted to do things but kept them on hold." -(from Dasvidaniya website)
Just think about what do you do every day right from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed. And if someone asks you what do you do daily. Most of us would say, "It is a routine life. I go to work, come back late, tired and stressed out, don't have enough time and energy to do other stuff, so I go back to bed. In the weekends I need to take care my house, my car, my laundry, go to a movie/go out with friends." That's not bad. Most us might be doing some things which we would like to do in our lives and most us might be happy with it. I just want everyone of us to think what other things we always wanted to do in our life, but would often neglect/ignore/forget or never really start thinking seriously about doing them.
It can be anything. Let me give you some examples of things what most people would like to do, but have some reasons for not doing them.
"I want to meet/call my friend(s) but didn't get a chance or don't have enough time."
"I wanted to say something to my friend/ someone special, but didn't have the courage in me."
"I want to say how much I love my parents/friends/or someone special, but didn't get a chance or don't have enough time. "
"I had a problem with my friend/or someone special, and we never spoke to each other. I would like to talk to/meet that person, but I can't because I have a ego problem."
"I want to help someone, someone who is in a need. Like orphan kids, people dying with hunger, people who doesn't have basic commodities, physically/mentally challenged people."
If you ask me, I always wanted to all of the above and even more.
"I would like to learn how to play a guitar/piano. I love to dance and would want to learn more."
"I would like to go on a trip to Europe, Paris,...... New York(at least)......"
"I would like to go the gym, loose some weight and try to be fit."
"I love to cook, so I would like to try more and more varieties."
"I would like to go back to India and stay with my parents and take of them."
The list goes on and on.....
It can be anything. It can be as simple as, "going early to work and getting back home early, so that I can sit in my balcony and have a cup of coffee, watching people around and enjoying the cool breeze."
Why don't we start thinking about things we would like/love to do and make a list of it. Make some time out our busy schedule and try to do atleast somethings out of our big list.
I don't want anyone to totally change the way they lead their life. I am nobody to tell you how to lead your life or that you are not happy with your life. After all it is your life, "just think of it". Most of us are gifted with everything we need to live. Every person in this world has problems. Do we really have problems? I don't have any. We are atleast lucky to be still alive.
So why don't we "live the life". "We are not sure if we would have another life. It's now or never"
Note - You might think this article is good/decent/bad or just a piece of crap. But, please do watch the movie(Dasvidaniya) if you can. You might not miss a lot, but you will miss "some-thing" (in your life) if you miss this movie.
Disclaimer - This movie made quite an impact on my mind/thinking. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. If you think that the way I think is wrong, please forgive me.
Extraas - After watching this movie, I actually had the courage to talk to my best friend about a major decision in his life. I always wanted to tell him about this "one thing", but was afraid that I would mess up and he might take it in a wrong way. I was ignoring. But after all he is my friend and I have to make him realize what I think about "it". Now I am very happy that I have atleast tried, and it is upto him to take a decision, because it's his life.
